When did the English arrive in Virginia?OnMay 13, 1607, 104 Englishmen arrived at Jamestown, Virginia. Early interaction between the Indians and the English was sometimes violent and explosive. Both groups believed their own ways were right and each had entirely different views about many things. One of the differences of opinion involved the ownership of land. The Powhatans believed the land belonged to everyone, not just to one person. Theweroanceusually served as steward and had the final say for the use of the land. The Powhatans had no understanding of the English concept of ownership of the land by one person. To the English an unoccupied tract of land was available for the taking. |
